‘Don’t be surprised’ if Army starts 3D printing its own parts: Materiel Command head
(Breaking Defense) The Army does not own the intellectual property for many of the parts that go into its weapons and platforms, making it difficult to easily or affordably reverse engineer and 3D print such parts when they need replacing, the acting lead of Army Materiel Command told Breaking Defense. As a result, Lt. Gen. Christopher Mohan, who serves as the deputy commanding general and acting commander of AMC, said industry should not “be surprised” if the service starts moving forward in trying to manufacture more of its own parts through 3D printing not derived from the vendor’s IP, so it can get more of its tanks, helicopters and other platforms up and running more quickly. Steve Shinn Steps Down as Acting NASA CFO
(ExecutiveGov) Steve Shinn, NASA’s deputy chief financial officer and acting CFO, has stepped down from his role to join The Aerospace Corp. as vice president and CFO. Greg Autry, the nominee for the CFO position at NASA, announced Shinn’s departure from the space agency and his new role at the nonprofit corporation. According to his profile on Aerospace’s website, Shinn will oversee the corporation’s accounting, finance, treasury and other business processes. He will help modernize business functions and financial tools to deliver on critical misions of government and commercial customers. Read More
Even if you’re furloughed, your skills don’t have to be
(NextGov/FCW) For federal employees caught up in the current shutdown, there’s not a lot anyone can do but wait. Offices are closed, projects are paused and even email inboxes have gone dark. But while the government may be standing still, your skills don’t have to be. Now might be a great time to take some of those comprehensive classes that you never had time for, especially if they teach critical skills like how to effectively program and employ artificial intelligence. To that end, Google is stepping up with the launch of an entire set of free online courses to teach people, including furloughed feds, how to use AI to boost productivity and prepare for what’s next as AI continues to evolve in new and unexpected ways.
