The rapid evolution and integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within software development demands updated approaches to cost estimation. Traditional cost estimation models, primarily designed for conventional software projects, often fail to address the unique complexities and variables inherent in AI algorithms. This presentation provides a comprehensive framework for estimating costs in an AI-based software projects, bridging the gap with insights from industry best practices, academic research, and lessons learned from recent AI projects. Key cost drivers such as data preparation, algorithm selection, model training, deployment, and maintenance are thoroughly analyzed. The framework introduces a multi-phased approach encompassing the many activities in a software development project, tailored specifically to AI projects. Emphasis is placed on the iterative and experimental nature of AI development and its impact on project costs and effort.
